“Creating Your Dream Practice: Eight Key Areas Every Doctor Should Master”
Understanding clinical orthodontics is just the beginning of building a successful practice. Young practitioners are expected to master many areas in which they receive little training. Dr. Carlson will cover eight key areas that are essential for building your dream practice. He will candidly discuss his first ten years in practice, and discuss how to focus on specific areas to maximize doctor/owner satisfaction. How many patients should you see per day? How should you set your fees? How many square feet do you really need? Who are the key players for your long-term financial success? Is there an ideal marketing plan? Who should you hire and how many employees do you need? Through his many personal examples, Dr. Carlson will help you organize your way to living your dream both in and out of the office.
Sean Carlson, DMD, MSD
Dr. Carlson received his dental degree from Harvard University in 1994. He received his orthodontic specialty training and his Master of Science degree in Oral Biology from the University of California at San Francisco. The evolution of technology and the advancements in our profession have taken us to an entirely new place. What is the role of the team (and the Doctor) in learning, growing, and becoming today’s “advanced” practice? How do we combat burn out and the all too common resistance to change?

”Miniplate Skeletal Anchorage for Orthodontic and Orthopedic Applications”
The main advantage of skeletal anchorage by modified miniplates is their fixation at a distance from the dental arch. This makes them very suitable for ‘en masse’ distal movement of the complete upper arch in class II treatment without extraction of premolars. Skeletal anchorage can also be used to intrude overerupted upper molars or to upright lower second molars and for mesial movement of the lower molars in case of agenesis of the second bicuspids. Furthermore miniplates resist better to high discontinuous forces than miniscrews do. Therefore they can be used for intermaxillary orthopedic traction. Class III elastics can be fixed between Bollard anchors on the skeletal base of the maxilla and mandible of young growing patients. Can the growth of the maxilla and/or mandible be stimulated, restricted or redirected? Which biomechanical approach should be used? The results of this continuous pure orthopedic traction will be discussed based on a Cone-beam CT at T1 and T2 co-registrated on the anterior skeletal base.

“The Teamwork Equation”
In the successful and growing orthodontic practice, there is nothing more important than teamwork. Forget technology, forget impressive skill…if you cannot work together, everything is lost — communication, enthusiasm and, ultimately, patients. Excellent teamwork promotes a sense of well-being, both among staff and patients, encourages superior attitudes and, therefore, superior patient care, and offers an opportunity to grow together in education, skill and savvy. This course will focus on how you can build teamwork, working together to create the energy and expertise that fuels success.

“The Interpersonal Connection: Combining Communication & Innovation”
With new and exciting technologies available to us, it’s often easy to focus on the future and forget the present, namely the valuable patient sitting in our chair. It may seem easier to establish a relationship with your computer than with your patient, but in order for a successful orthodontic practice to thrive, technology must take a back seat to the human connection. We must embrace and perfect the ultimate skill of face-to-face communication, combining caring and sincere chairside communication with the advanced treatment techniques we now employ. In a high-energy and entertaining discussion, Dr. Graham will help all of us perfect that personal touch that makes patient WANT to be in your practice, and more importantly, refer all of their friends!

“An Orthodontic Update on Treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Children and Adults”
Orthodontists will undoubtedly become more and more involved in treating patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) for several reasons. There is increased understanding that OSA is a disease that not only affects quality of life in many ways, but also poses a significant risk to overall health. By their training, orthodontists are well qualified to provide some of the most effective treatment for OSA. For mild cases, intraoral mandibular anterior repositioning appliances change the position of upper airway structures to increase patency or reduce the potential for collapse of the pharyngeal airway during sleep. For severe cases, distraction osteogenesis and orthognathic surgery to expand and advance the maxilla and mandible have proven to be very effective.

“3D Imaging: Selected Applications in Orthodontics”
Maxillofacial asymmetries, deviant facial growth and progressive changes in occlusion have clinical relevance because of their underlying etiology and impact on management. The differential and specific diagnoses for these asymmetries, the mechanisms for their clinical expression and the imaging decisions necessary for a radiographic diagnosis are the topics to be discussed. A background, will be presented, that describes the biomechanical relationships of the craniofacial structures as a framework to subsequent discussion on development, diagnosis and management of maxillofacial asymmetries. 3 dimensional visualization and reconstruction of craniofacial anatomy is integral to diagnosis and the understanding of the biomechanical relationships in the face and jaws. The recent introduction of the Cone Beam Volume Tomography (3-D digital imaging technology) into dentistry has opened the door for advancements that will benefit orthodontic practitioners and their patients.
