Orthodontics Head Professor Nigel Hunt Overview This unit undertakes treatment of, and research into, malaligned or misplaced teeth and abnormalities of the jaws, with special expertise in caring for those suffering from facial deformity, cleft palate and hypodontia. The unit has a very strong teaching and clinical record and there are close links with several other hospitals including the Mayday University Hospital, Croydon, Kingston Hospital, the Royal Surrey County Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. Many UK orthodontic consultants have trained at the Eastman.
The Eastman Orthodontic Unit is the only orthodontic department in the UK devoted solely to postgraduate education. The Unit has a national and international reputation which comes from 50 years experience of specialist training. The postgraduates, the teaching staff and all ancillary personnel work together within the ethos of a team. The course as a whole, including its content and its teaching staff, are appraised frequently enabling a constantly evolving process to ensure it meets the highest quality standards and is appropriate for modern orthodontics. It offers a first class, all round educational experience with a blend of both young and experienced, enthusiastic teachers in the clinical, academic and research fields.
Research Interests Clinical research in the unit is closely linked to the activities of the Institute's research divisions. See Research in the Division of Craniofacial and Developmental Sciences. Research Collaborations The Orthodontics Unit actively collaborates with other specialties within the Eastman Dental Institute, in particular with the Restorative Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering and Microbiology Units.
