General Description
The goal of the Advanced Education Program in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is to provide students with an education of the highest quality that will enable them to render proficient orthodontic care to their patients throughout their professional career.

Didactic Program
The curriculum includes graduate-level biomedical science as well as orthodontic specific courses. Over the 24 months of training, the program devotes 20 percent of the time to didactic education, in the form of lectures, seminars, and laboratory courses. Students participate actively by presenting cases in diagnostic conferences (case presentations), literature review, and seminars.

Year One: Craniofacial Development, Biology of Bone, Head and Neck Anatomy, Clinical Pharmacology, Biomechanics, Orthodontic Orientation, Diagnosis and Treatment, Edgewise Appliance, Current Literature in Orthodontics, Interdisciplinary Seminars, Seminars in Growth and Development, Seminars in Orthognathic Surgery, Orthodontic Records and Clinical Interpretation, Orthodontic Theory and Mechanotherapy, Introduction to Pedagogy, Basic Life Support, and CPR I.

Year Two
: Orthodontics Practice Management and Seminars, Orthodontics Clinical Seminars, Diagnosis and Treatment Planning, Orthodontics Clinic, Current Literature in Orthodontics, Interdisciplinary Seminars, and Orthodontics Research.

Clinical Program
Students are assigned a large number of patients presenting a variety of malocclusions, representative of all malocclusions encountered in a contemporary orthodontic practice. They gain valuable experience in diagnosis, treatment planning, orthodontic therapy, and patient management. Patients are treated with state-of-the-art orthodontic appliances.

Research Program
Under the guidance of the departmental research committee, all students must develop a research project and bring it to completion. Students are expected to present their research project at the annual research meeting of the orthodontic programs in the New York-New Jersey area and to write a thesis, which must be accepted by the committee. In addition, they are expected to turn in the research material in a publishable format.

Teaching Program
Students teach both at the graduate and undergraduate level.

Accreditation Status
The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association.

Length of the Program
The Advanced Education Program in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics starts August 1 of each year and lasts two full calendar years (24 months). This program provides students with an extensive clinical experience that includes both basic sciences and departmental lectures and seminars.
